Of armors that you have access to at that stage, I think volvidon is your best bet. armour, jaggi gives attack up and you can gem in speed sharpening. On MH3U, however, everything is a piece of cake with the starting leather armor (non-upgraded) and a Rugged Great Sword. Old. Punish Draw's definitely not a bad skill, but not only will Sheathe keep you alive, moving and dealing more damage, it's also actually useful against monsters with weakpoints that aren't their face or whose faces are hard to hit (Jho, Gold/Silver Rath/Uragaan/etc. Armor skills are threshold base, so look at the status screen before trying to mix and match.
